On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
