New research suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
