In a significant military action, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military command.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" observed at the location. This represents another instance where Ukraine has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets inside Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the main suppliers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to end the war.
“We had a really good conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, of course, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
In a parallel internal matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov shared backing another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, after the sentencing, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in defiance.
Foreign Prisoner Case
Russian authorities has stated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of espionage.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and advocate for his release as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its basement, is scheduled to reopen. Authorities in control have promoted the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.
Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Moscow effort to showcase its rule in seized territories, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of dissenting voices and confiscation of assets from local residents.
The theatre is due to reopen by the month's end with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the last 24 months.
