The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
