The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
