The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
