The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing dryness. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the federal monitoring program illustrated that the entire state is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development came after weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes far beyond their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, leading to widespread flooding, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Until late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those final dry conditions.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

However, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the months to come.
