The English Team to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they secure the anticipated passage for a competition taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an English men’s game since May 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the England side for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Demonstration
The championship was inaugurated at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were heckled as they entered the site by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The first match of the European Championship will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will include the Welsh team if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.
Stadiums and Playoffs
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.
