Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.
Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".
The White House withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Earlier Events
Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Various sources indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.
However, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.
"Freeze the lines where it stands," he remarked.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the current line of contact.
The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would merely represent a brief pause.
Political Perspectives
The "fundamental issues" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.
Zelensky commented discussions about the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.
He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.
Weapons Discussions
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before reports that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.
Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
