Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He fought justice and the law prevailed.

Sixty days after getting a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Incarceration

The found-guilty instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the near future, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security facility.

Past Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative former paratrooper showed scant mercy for Brazil’s prison population.

“What’s the need to provide these dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Prison Destination Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, a group of four this week visited the prison in an seeming attempt to prevent the supreme court from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the septuagenarian leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the outcome of a life-threatening knife attack during the last election race – meant it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the condition of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That’s almost one meter squared per prisoner.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.

Supporters React

He is not the sole person expressing views ahead of the former president’s predicted detention.

Penning in a leading publication, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the greatest unfairness in its past”.

“It represents an injustice that erodes the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Varied Popular Reaction

This could be true given the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. Yet his anticipated jailing has also warmed the spirits of many individuals who think he should be incarcerated for planning to prevent the elected leader from taking power – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a representative for the incumbent administration's allied group, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to get respectful care – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long applauding the severe handling of convicts, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that basic rights are not for criminals – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning conduct”.

Likely Jail Conditions

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand detainees, his probable location looks to be a nearby prison for officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular official residence, around 12 miles away.

According to sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” information stated.

Ideological Responses

He criticized the talked-about plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
