Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in armed forces or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to protect and support this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the law or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a joint announcement condemning the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this nation and made an oath to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must unite and condemn the ex-president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the official said. "We see active officials of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
