Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
