This production, though, may align too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series released last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a popular book aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
